MRP (Papuan People’s Assembly) Version 2 is the Enemy of Papua

Today, we, the Papua nation, are in mourning again on the passing of Mr. Agus Alue Alua, former chairman of MRP. He was called home by the Creator at 2 o’clock this afternoon Numbay time , Papua

He went after struggling with various polemics concerning the 2nd Edition of the MRP being forced (on Papua) by Jakarta. This is an explosive issue everywhere, and it is rumored that the main pressure was coming from the Red and White Line militia and the security forces who were forcing the removal of the names of the former members who were deemed to be vocal in defending the rights of the indigenous Papuans, and opposing Special Autonomy which resulted in the Special Assembly of the MRP last June.

It is possible he was under pressure because he was removed from being a member of this new MRP by the Minister for Security and the Home Affairs Minister, and considered a separatist because he facilitated the Special Assembly in June with its 11 recommendations.

Besides the late Mr Alua, Ms. Hana Hikoyabi’s name was also removed. This decision was made a long time ago but was only received at 1 this afternoon, while 73 other members by Kesbang since this morning were ‘quarantined’ at the Hotel Matoa Jayapura to wait for the inauguration which is being pushed through on Tuesday, 12 April later.

Throughout the morning, from Jayapura to the Sentani airport, military and police raids are being carried out and strict security controls are in place at Sentani airport, with full weaponry.

Our situation in Papua is increasingly erratic, only God is the source of our strength!

Agus Alua, MRP chairman dies

It has just been announced that Agus Alua, the chairman of the MRP, died today at the Dian Harapan Hospital in Jayapura.

The cause of death is not yet known but it appears that he was suddenly taken ill and may already have passed away before reaching the hospital. He is survived by his wife Corry Pekey and three children.

Socrates Sofyan Yoman , the chairman of the Alliance of Baptist Churches in Papua, said that the Papuan people have lost a great leader. ‘He was a great man who did a huge amount for the Papuan people. We will feel his loss deeply.’

‘Although he had passed on, his spirit of struggle will remain with us. Dont feel frustrated, his spirit will remain here in the Land of  Papua,’ he said.

The Majelis Rakyat Papua of which he was the chairman during its first term which has just come to an end, was created in accordance with the  provisions of the Special Autonomy Law No 21/2001, and was composed solely of Papuans, including representatives of women’s organisations, of youth organisations and of various ethnic groups.

Call for dissolution of MRP

Jayapura: All elements within the United Papuan Peoples’ Coalition for Justice (KRPBK) are firm in their rejection of Special Autonomy – OTSUS, and call for the dissolution of the MRP as well as rejecting UP4B (Unit for Accelerated Development of Papua and West Papua) which was recently created by the central government.

The reasons: The DPRP (Papuan provincial legislative assembly) adopted the OTSUS law for Papua in 2001, but ten years on, OTSUS has been a total failure, according to KRPBK spokesman Selpius Bobii, following a meeting between the coalition and the DPRP on Monday 4 April.

He said they had urged the DPRP to publicly announce its decision, based on the aspirations that were adopted in 2001. This led to the creation of a special OTSUS committee, Pansus OTSUS to accommodate the aspirations of the Papuan people. ‘We will continue to voice our rejection of the failed OTSUS.’ He also called on Pansus OTSUS to hold a plenary session with one item only on the agenda, the rejection of OTSUS.

Asked whether they had set a deadline for this plenary session, he said they could not speak about this for the moment but they were working to consolidate the views of all elements of Papuan society, and were planning to organise a nationwide strike as well as actions to occupy all government offices in the Land of Papua.

Asked to explain this further, Yunus Wonda (who also attended the meeting with the DPRP) said that calling a plenary session was not an easy thing to . There were a number of political parties in the DPRP each with their own mechanisms  and statutes which must be accommodated. ‘Rejecting OTSUS is not just an emotional issue but must take into account a number or ways in which OTSUS had failed, before the issue could be discussed at a plenary session of the DPRP.

Pansus OTSUS will still have to make an evaluation of OTSUS which will involve a number of NGOs, academics, traditional leaders, leaders of the women’s and students’ movements, in order to be able to act in unison

Members of new MRP urged to resign

The chairman of the West Papua Forum of Democracy (FORDEM), Salmon Yumame, has declared that the leaders of the MRP – Majelis Rakyat Papua – Papuan People’s Assembly – failed to have the courage to acknowledge to the public the mistakes made by the MRP in their commitment to the Papuan people. He accused them of being ‘banci’ or ‘perverts’ for misleading the people.

He said it was highly regrettable that the members of the MRP who had, together with the Papuan people, declared their firm rejection of the Special Autonomy Law 21/2001 which included the creation of the MRP, yet had allowed themselves to be nominated for membership of the second MRP. They had failed to have the courage to withdraw their names, so that the aspirations of the Papuan people could be comprehensively raised with the central government.

He expressed the hope that those who had already been chosen to become members of the MRP and were now waiting to be sworn in would withdraw and would, along with the Papuan people, demand that the central government respond to the eleven recommendations adopted in June 2010.

The recommendations were handed over to the Papuan Provincial
Legislative Assembly, the DPRP. He said that all the problems confronting the Papuan people were contained in those eleven
recommendations.

Salmon said that FORDEM will continue to organise peaceful actions,
press conferences and issue statements to express the aspirations of the Papuan people.

In June last year, the MRP, along with other components of the Papuan people, held a grand consultation which had resulted in the adoption of he 11 recommendations, which included calling for Freeport Indonesia to close down, for a dialogue between the Indonesian government and the Papuan people mediated by a neutral, third party, for the rejection of Special Autonomy and for a referendum.

Socratez Sofyan Yoman reject the MRP now being set up

SOCRATEZ: NEXT MRP WILL NOT HELP EASE PEOPLE’S SUFFERINGS

The chairman of the United Baptist Churches in Papua, the Rev Socratez Sofyan Yoman, is of the opinion that the new MRP (Majelis Rakyat Papua -Papuan People’s Assembly) now being formed will only add a new dimension to the suffering of the Papuan people.

‘Please don’t add to the people’s suffering. The Papuan people should be consistent in making no compromises with the members of the MRP now being appointed.’

He said that Special Autonomy (OTSUS) has been rejected by the people which means that the MRP, which is at the heart of OTSUS, will do nothing to protect the interests of the indigenous Papuan people (orang asli Papua) and its presence is not acceptable. He also said that the political elite should not try to utilise the present moment to promote their personal interests and cause further sufferings for the people.

He said that there is no legal justification or reason to continue with
the nomination of the new MRP because most of the churches are not
involved in the process, although some have allowed themselves to be
recruited.

He called on the Papuan people to consistently refuse to get involved in the political process that is now under way. The people’s struggle must stay pure and press for something better.

‘We from the churches will stand by the voice of God’s congregation and continue to consistently reject OTSUS. ‘
