Live Blog: 2023 December 1 West Papua Independence Day protests and commemorations

Reports from the West Papua National Committee (Komite Nasional Papua Barat – KNPB) Mamberamo Region have detailed an action to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of West Papua’s stolen independence.
To prevent commemoration of the anniversary, Joint Police Apparatus failed in an attempt to stop the KNPB Secretariat conducting a Thanksgiving worship activty. Police were “grievously disturbed” by the appearance of the banned Morning Star independence flag on the door of the KNPB Secretariat Building.

The Deputy Chief of Police ordered polcie members to immediately remove the painted Morning Star over the door of the building.


NUMBAY (Jayapura), Dec 1 2023: The National Committee for West Papua (KNPB) in Numbay commemorate Independence Day for the Republic of West Papua which was declared on 1 December 1961.
The clandestine sector of KNPB held a viewing of the historical film showing West Papua’s declaration of independence at Imbi Park at 11:23 to 12:00. Declaring independence is in accordance with the Article 1 of UN Charter, which mandates the right to self-determination.
KNPB continued with a candle-lighting ceremony honouring their predecessors and prayers for a free West Papua.

KUPANG, Dec 1 2023: West Papuan students residing in Kupang carried out a demonstration in commemoration of Papuan Independence Day today and were intercepted by security forces. 21 people were arrested and taken into police custody.

SORONG, Dec 1 2023: The People’s Alliance commemorate the 62nd anniversary of Papuan Independence Day, which was declared on December 1, 1961.
The action involved speeches, socialisation and leafletting to local people.
However the police mobile brigade arrived in large numbers and closed in on the demonstration, declaring it illegal.
Police dispersed the demonstration by shooting incendiary tear gas grenades directly at protestors, injuring several from body impacts, and shooting towards the estimated 50 protestors.
